Responding to media: RIP a remix manifesto part 9 - Culture Jam!
Give your personal response to the clip. If you have some difficulty here are some questions to keep in mind.
In Chapter nine we are shown a more personal side of Greg Gillis (aka Girl Talk). Brett introduces us to his early remix heroes "Negativland" who coined the term "Culture Jamming." We are then shown that 90 percent of media is owned by 6 corporations that are represented by two lobby groups (the RIAA and MPAA).
- Culture Jamming is using the modern media against itself to critique the power it has over our lives. Mark Hosler (of Negativland) states, "Why do I need to ask you (modern media) to take a little bit of it and make something out of it and make fun of you, critique you?" Can you answer his question?
- The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), represent 90 percent of media holdings in the United States. What effect do you think this majority of power has on culture in North America or the World?
Remember to put your own opinion in and to back it up with evidence.
Today's assignment:
Look back at your assignment that you did on Tuesday. (which should be handed in all ready) If you have not handed it in, please post it in the forum
under EMS3O1. In this article I asked you to be as unbiased as possible. Not all parts of the newspaper are unbiased. Today we will be looking at
one particular section: the opinion comic.
First Look at the following comics and discuss with the person next to you the following:
- What is the subject of the comic?
- What is it saying about the subject?
- Who would like this comic?
- Who wouldn't like this comic?
Comics:
